One thing that is often overlooked when baby-proofing or pet-proofing a space is the cords on window coverings – though they may seem like a small or easily forgotten detail, they have been found to pose a number of serious risks to children and pets.
A study from the Consumer Product Safety Commission’s National Electronic Injury Surveillance System found that there were around 17,000 window blind-related injuries from 1990 to 2015 that resulted in hospitalization.
To mitigate these dangers, the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and Window Coverings Manufacturers Association (ANSI) have updated manufacturing standards to require most custom shades and window coverings to have inaccessible cords, shortened cords, or include an approved safety device.
While these regulations have been voluntary since 2018, these stricter standards have given additional rise to solutions like cord tensioners, cordless window coverings (such as spring rollers), and complete shade motorization.
To understand why these solutions matter, let’s explore the dangers posed by hanging blind cords, as well as how these solutions mitigate them.
The Potential Risks of Hanging Blind Cords
As with any other danger, the risks of hanging or loose blind cords can vary in severity from minor bumps and bruises resulting from entanglement, to much more serious threats.
Entanglement
One of the primary risks associated with hanging or loose blind cords is entanglement. Children and pets are naturally curious and may reach for or play with dangling cords, leading to them becoming wrapped around their limbs or necks.
Entanglement can cause injuries such as cuts, bruises, or even fractures if a child or pet falls while entangled.
Scars and Other Injuries
Blind cords can also cause scars and other serious injuries. If a cord tightens around a child’s limb or neck, it can lead to deep cuts or even lacerations as they struggle to free themselves. These injuries may require medical attention and can leave lasting scars, both physically and emotionally.
Strangulation
Perhaps the most severe and highly documented risk associated with hanging blind cords is strangulation. Young children are particularly vulnerable to this, as they may accidentally loop cords around their necks while playing or exploring. Since these cords can tighten quickly, it can cut off air supply and lead to suffocation.
Permanent Brain Damage
In the most severe cases, incidents involving blind cords can lead to permanent brain damage. This typically happens when a child or pet experiences prolonged oxygen deprivation due to entanglement or strangulation. Oxygen deprivation can cause irreversible brain damage, affecting cognitive functions and physical abilities for life. Even surviving such an incident can result in long-term disabilities and significant challenges for both the affected individual and their family.
Modern Developments in Blind Cord Safety
With the addition of these new regulations, certain devices have been developed to enhance convenience and functionality while prioritizing the safety of children and pets.
Cord Tensioners
Cord tensioners are devices designed to keep blind cords taut and out of reach. They work by securing the cord against the wall or window frame, eliminating any loose hanging cords that could become a hazard to children or pets.
Tensioners are specifically designed to eliminate the ability for someone (primarily an infant or small child) to be able to pull the cord away from the wall creating a large enough loop to create a hazard. Newer devices will actually lock onto the cord, preventing use until the device is properly installed with the appropriate amount of tension.
By maintaining tension, these devices help prevent accidental entanglement and ensure a safer environment in homes with window coverings.
Cordless Window Coverings
Cordless window coverings, such as spring rollers, operate without the use of traditional cords. Instead, they feature a spring mechanism that allows users to adjust the shade or blind by simply pulling or pushing on the bottom rail. This design eliminates the need for exposed cords completely, reducing the risk of entanglement and making them a safer choice, especially for homes with young children and pets.
Shade Motorization
Shade motorization is the process of automating window coverings using electric motors. With motorized shades, cords are replaced with a motor-driven system that allows users to open, close, or adjust the shades remotely with a touch of a button or through a smart device. This technology not only enhances convenience but also eliminates hanging cords entirely, significantly reducing the risk of accidents and improving overall safety.
